Today the Assembly Budget Subcommittee responsible for higher education funding voted unanimously to approve full funding to the California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees’ budget request, additional funding for enrollment growth, and critical funding to support homeless and food insecure students by funding the budget request in Assemblymember Anna Caballero’s bill, AB 2784, which will rapidly rehouse homeless students on three CSU campuses. We are thankful to the budget committee leadership and members, particularly Assemblymember Kevin McCarty.
Now the Assembly budget proposal and the Senate budget proposal—which also goes above the CSU budget ask in order to fund additional enrollment growth but does not include funding for homeless or food insecure students—both go to the legislative budget conference committee. This committee will reconcile the two chamber’s disparate budget items to finalize a budget proposal to send to Governor Brown on behalf of the entire legislature.
These budget proposals show that legislators are listening to the concerns voiced by students. The Cal State Student Association is thankful for all the advocacy done by CSU students this year. However, while we are pleased with the outcomes so far, our work does not end here. We need students to remain engaged in the conference committee deliberations and throughout the budget process, which ends by June 15th when the final budget must be signed. Please continue to advocate for the needs of our students, and particularly, our students struggling to meet their basic needs.
