CSSA maintains a federal relations program in order to affect federal policies that impact California State University (CSU) students. This program includes regular advocacy trips to Washington, D.C., where students meet with elected officials and higher education stakeholders about pressing higher education issues and provide a valuable CSU student perspective.
CSSA advocacy efforts in D.C. affords some of the CSU system’s brightest student leaders an opportunity to learn about higher education issues affecting CSU students at the federal level, receive training and experience advocating, and develop effective leadership skills. Most importantly, it ensures that the CSU’s advocacy efforts benefit from the inclusion of student perspectives, stories, and achievements. Recent advocacy issues include, but are not limited to, student loan interest rates, loan repayment options and education, Pell Grants, Gear Up and Trio, and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act (DACA).
