CSSA Sacramento Advocacy

November 15, 2017

On November 14th and 15th, 2017, the Cal State Student Association sent a delegation to Sacramento to meet with state legislators.  CSSA’s delegation was led by Maggie White (CSSA President), Alana Lim (CSSA Chair), Marcos Montes (CSSA Vice President of Legislative Affair), Aaron Castaneda (Vice President of Finance), Michael Pratt (CSSA Vice President of University Affairs), Dr. Rob Shorette (CSSA Executive Director), Jared Giarrusso (CSSA Assistant Director of Government Relations), and Amparo Diaz (CSSA Government Relations Associate).  Throughout this two-day trip, CSSA representatives presented our 2017-18 Policy Agenda, highlighting the four policy priorities of our organization; a need for more mental health resources, student affordability and basic needs, a safe campus climate, and equity in student achievement.

CSSA’s notable meetings with policymakers included Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, Assemblymember Kevin McCarty, as well as twelve other legislative offices. During these meetings, there was a high level of interest in student basic needs, including food and housing support.  While there was general support for these issues, no official policy was proposed during the advocacy visit.

After this trip, the delegation traveled back to San Luis Obispo for the November plenary.  The CSSA Legislative Affairs committee was briefed on the outcomes of the trip. Additionally, the committee was given an opportunity to create their own policy proposals to address the issues presented in the policy agenda. CSSA leadership and staff will review these proposals and work with the committee to create potential solutions.
